The Way Here
Hanoi lies about one hundred and seventy kilometres away, around two and a half to three hours by the expressway. Limousine buses and shared vans offer comfortable transfers, often with hotel pickup. Staff can arrange tickets at reasonable prices. Travelling on weekdays avoids heavy traffic.
Cat Bi International Airport in Hai Phong is around forty kilometres away, usually under an hour by car. It connects with Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and some international destinations. The hotel offers airport transfers for a fee. Taxis and ride hailing apps also cover the route.
Van Don International Airport, about fifty kilometres east, serves domestic flights and occasional international routes. Transfers take around one hour.
Grab and local taxis operate throughout Ha Long and are inexpensive. Agreeing fares or using metered taxis prevents misunderstandings.
Cruise boats leave from the international cruise port and Tuan Chau marina. Hotel pickup is usually included in tour packages.
Motorbike rental is possible, but traffic can be heavy and an international licence is required.
During typhoon season from July to October, cruises may be cancelled due to weather. Flexible plans help.
